Who We Are

"Christians Leading in the Economy"

Both Christian and Ecumenical

CABE was founded as a Catholic managers association in 1938 but since Vatican II, it has always been open to Christians of all denominations. Many Christian organisations have tended to become identified with a given form of churchmanship or tradition, which we believe detracts from the universal application of the Christian gospel in the work situation. CABE is therefore determinedly ecumenical, with members from different branches and traditions, believing that we all have a common purpose in promoting Christian values in the workplace. We applaud this diversity and believe the variety of views expressed adds richly to our discussions, provided we are open-minded and prepared to listen.

Leading and influencing organisational culture through Christian Values

Individual Christians frequently believe that they can do little to enhance the decision-making in their own organisations, yet time and again it is observed that it is committed individuals who can make a significant impact on those around them. Organisational culture develops ultimately from people employed within the organisation, and individual leaders have the opportunity to shape policies and decisions in which they participate during their normal operations. CABE’s Principles are an attempt to help individual Christians identify areas for attention in action and prayer. Corporately CABE provides many forums to assist with the support and encouragement of individual leaders in this context.

Active in the Economy - private, public and voluntary sectors

CABE's influence stretches across different sectors and we would like to cultivate a wider membership and debate. We believe that Christian values are applicable throughout the economy, and that management applications frequently translate beneficially across sectors. It is likely, however, that the commercial sector, where we believe that the greatest test is to come, will continue to inspire CABE’s future deliberations and resulting outputs. Our aim is to provide a stimulus to this cross-fertilisation. We would like to dispel the view that Christians don’t really understand the real world, and our aim here is to demonstrate that Christians are as effective as anyone else in matters concerning economic life.

CABE's Future Aspirations

* To establish a UK-wide CABE network to resource, stimulate and connect Christians leading in the economy;

* To gain wide acceptance in the UK that Christian values enhance economic and organisational health;

* To be recognised as a credible voice of business leaders by the media in the UK

We will achieve this through the active participation of CABE members, trustees, advisory council members and patrons attending events, developing resources and helping to increase public recognition and influence.
