CHAIRMAN, DEPUTIES AND TREASURER
CABE's chairman Bernard Keigher who was appointed at our last AGM has stepped down from the post for personal reasons. John Ripley has now been appointed interim chair pending approval at the 2010 AGM.
John Ripley (Chair), John Ripley graduated from Cambridge with a degree in Natural Sciences and has subsequently qualified as an ACMA. He worked for Unilever for 35 years, with various assignments in the UK, Netherlands and working with many developing markets, culminating in roles as Deputy Chief Financial Officer and Head of Corporate Development. He now has a portfolio of roles, including non-executive positions with CABI (not-for-profit organisation, owned by 46 member countries, specialising in scientific publishing, research and communication) and the Department for Children, Schools & Families. John has served for 8 years as a secondary school governor and is supporting other schools with a challenge to raise their performance. With his wife Anne, he has been a member of Bookham Baptist Church for over 25 years, with varying roles including small group leaders. He is an advisor to Feba Radio and trustee of the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity and is to become chair of the Church Mission Society.
Eve Poole (Deputy Chair), is Deputy Director of the Ashridge Public Leadership Centre at Ashridge Business School, and is studying part-time for a PhD in Capitalism and Theology. Eve graduated from Durham with a degree in Theology before working for the Church Commissioners for England. Having gained an MBA she then worked as a change management consultant with Deloitte Consulting. She is a Visiting Lecturer at several Business Schools. Eve serves on the Chelsea Deanery Synod, and sings in the choir at Christ Church, Chelsea. Read her blog
Christina Rees (Deputy Chair), is a writer and broadcaster, contributing to many national newspapers and journals, as well as to television and radio programmes, including Thought for the Day on BBC Radio 4. Christina is a Partner of Media Maxima and Director of The Churchfield Trust. She is an elected member of the General Synod of the Church of England and the Archbishops' Council. She is also Chair of WATCH (Women and the Church) and WOM (Women on the Move) and Vice-Chair of It Takes One Woman, a grant-making body for Anglican women in the developing world.
Liz Paxton, (Treasurer) graduated from University with a BSc in Social Science and started her career as a business analyst delivering training around the implementation of new computer based systems. Following the birth of her son, she joined Diageo (then Grand Metropolitan) as Project Manager, then UK IT Director. Her final role with Diageo was as the IT Director for Customer Management, delivering systems, processes, change, training and e-learning throughout the world. Liz is now a Management Trainer and Facilitator, working with major corporations with interpersonal skills, stakeholder management and facilitating through cultural and business change. She has worked with a variety of organisations in both UK and Ireland, in telecoms, banking and fmcg. As the Management Training is part-time, Liz has spent the last few years furthering her understanding of Christian Studies by completing the Course in Christian Studies run by the diocese of Chelmsford, and is currently finalising her first year of Theology with St Mellitus College.
OTHER TRUSTEES
Richard Higginson has been Lecturer in Ethics and Leadership at Ridley Hall, Cambridge since 1989, formerly at St John’s College, Durham. He is Director of the Ridley Hall Foundation, which relates the Christian faith to the business world, also co-editor of the quarterly journal Faith in Business. A notable author, including a book on Questions of Business Life, he was recently ordained Deacon to St Philip’s and St Stephen’s Church, Cambridge after 20 years as a Reader.
Ralph Hollinghurst joined Mobil Oil Corporation in 1959 with degrees in Chemistry from Keble College Oxford. He initially worked in International Research & Development on fuels & lubricants, based in the UK and USA, and later became Strategic & Marketing Planning Manager, advising the UK Board on Investments. Ralph worked as Manager Supply & Trading for the UK, and Western Hemisphere Products based in the USA, before being appointed GM Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) & Director Mobil Trading Supply Ltd in 1988, with global responsibility for supply, trading and business development. After early retirement in 1995, he worked as an International LPG Consultant. An active Christian at Parish & Deanery level, including developing vision statements & church objectives, he has a Bishop’s Certificate in Theology. Now a London Club Rotarian, involved in charitable projects including a developmental one in Africa to celebrate the club’s Centenary, and at work on a book on Business Ethics.
John McLean Fox, was initially an engineer with Alcan UK following graduation. In 1960 he joined the PA Consulting Group, where he served in a variety of roles and retired as a Director in 1989. He launched and ran a company ‘Future Perfect’ for 4 years before diversifying into the voluntary and community sector, in which he acts as a Trustee for a number of charities, including the Centre for Charity Effectiveness at Cass Business School. He is a Franciscan tertiary, a spiritual director, and active in his local church.
Peter Shaw, CB is an executive coach working with a national coaching organisation. He coaches at senior levels in the private, public and voluntary sectors. He was a Director General and Board member within Government Departments between 1993 and 2003. Peter has published various articles on coaching and a recent book entitled ‘Mirroring Jesus as leader’ for Grove Books. Peter is a Governor of Cranmer Hall, Durham and is a Church of England Reader.
Paul Valler, is a regular conference and seminar speaker on topics such as leadership, integrity and work/life balance – inspiring people to make the right choices. He has lectured at Cambridge University and Cranfield Management Centre, and spoken at the House of Lords (on the spiritual and ethical implications of the Internet). In a former life, he was finance and human resources director of Hewlett-Packard Ltd, as well as European general manager for Hewlett-Packard’s European leasing business. He was also a founding director of Hewlett-Packard International Bank in Dublin. A teaching elder at Finchampstead Baptist Church with an itinerant preaching ministry, Paul has also spoken at Spring Harvest on faith in the workplace.
DIRECTOR and ADMINISTRATOR
Jackie Nelson, (Director of CABE), joined Unilever as a management trainee in September 1988 after graduating with a degree in Management Studies and Russian. She qualified as a Management Accountant (CIMA) and worked for Unilever for 12 years as an accountant, project manager and supply chain manager. It was only when she let God into her work through a Christian Fellowship at Unilever that her faith started to grow and she later helped to set up the Christian group at JPMorgan where she worked in Human Resources until March 2006. Jackie joined CABE initially as Project Manager for 'Principles for those in Business' and her role is now Director of CABE. She is also developing training and consultancy support for businesses in Central Asia. Jackie is also the Co-ordinator for the Street Pastors initiative in Tunbridge Wells, and a guide for Crossroads Retreats.
Jayne Payne (CABE's Administrator and Membership Secretary), works for Transform Work UK who provide a valuable administration service to CABE.
